Files Evidence of Fetal Death after Thimerosal-Containing Flu
Shots
is.gd/aP93c
CoMeD,
Inc.,
a non-profit corporation, filed declarations from pregnant women harmed
by Thimerosal-containing influenza shots in the US District Court for
the District of
|
|
|
Columbia
(case:
1:2009cv-00015). These declarations
report that health care providers seemed to be largely unaware of the
continuing presence of mercury in vaccines and that these providers
often failed to accurately disclose the known risks to the patient from
these Thimerosal-containing vaccines, which are specifically
recommended for pregnant women and children.
Thimerosal, used as a preservative in
vaccines without the required proofs of safety, is half mercury by
weight and a known bioaccumulative human poison, neurotoxin,
carcinogen, mutagen, teratogen and immune-system disruptor. In order
not to exceed the EPA’s safe daily reference dose (RfD) for mercury
ingestion from the mercury contained in one 0.5-mL Thimerosal-preserved
flu shot, a pregnant woman or child would have to weigh more than 550
pounds. Worse, the Material Safety Data sheets for Thimerosal list:
fetal death, miscarriage, mental retardation and gross motor impairment
as possible outcomes of in utero exposure to Thimerosal.
CoMeD, Inc. originally sought injunctive
relief regarding the use of Thimerosal-preserved flu shots for pregnant
women in August 2009. In oral arguments, CoMeD’s attorneys detailed the
danger posed by Thimerosal and the denial of informed consent
accompanying its administration in most cases.
CoMeD’s attorneys also argued that
federal regulations mandating that “any preservative used shall be
sufficiently nontoxic so that the amount … will not be toxic to the
recipient” [21 CFR § 610.15(a)] have been illegally ignored in the
case of Thimerosal. To establish that Thimerosal used as a preservative
is “sufficiently nontoxic…”, toxicity studies must prove its safety.
Yet, as the US Food and Drug Administration and the drug manufacturers
have repeatedly admitted, they have not conducted the toxicity studies
required to prove the Thimerosal in a single vaccine dose is
“sufficiently nontoxic …”.
Half a year after CoMeD filed a request
for a preliminary injunction, which has not yet been granted, to stop
the administration of mercury-preserved flu shots to pregnant women,
CoMeD members now seek to establish with this filing, that damage they
predicted to unborn children sadly has occurred. Declarations filed
today detail fetal deaths, miscarriages, stillbirths and premature
births following the administration of Thimerosal-preserved/containing
flu shots. In addition to personal declarations, CoMeD has filed copies
of records from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, maintained
by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, documenting
reports of more than one hundred fetal deaths, miscarriages,
stillbirths, and premature births attributed to flu shots in the period
from September through December of 2009 alone, as well as an additional
sixty-plus personal accounts of similar flu-shot-related harm.
With safer alternatives to Thimerosal
and the proven ability to make vaccines without any preservative, the
use of Thimerosal or any other mercury compound in vaccines without the
toxicological proofs of safety required by drug law is both
indefensible and illegal, according to CoMeD.

Special-Education
Stimulus Funds Diverted in NJ Counties.
By Shannon Mullen app.com is.gd/aP2vp
Kim Vaccaro of Brick wasn't aware that
last year's federal stimulus package included a $2.4 million grant to
help her district enhance its special education program.
So it was news to her that Brick spent
just half of the money on new initiatives for special education kids.
The rest went to pay the health benefits of some 250 special education
teachers and staff.
"That's pretty outrageous," said
Vaccaro, 45, who is president of the Brick Township Special Education
Parent Teacher Association.
"That is totally unfair to our kids,"
said Vaccaro, whose 12-year-old son Joel has autism. "Once again, they
get shortchanged."
An Asbury Park Press investigation found
that school districts in Monmouth and Ocean counties used the special
aid to pay legal bills, expand non-special education programs and pay
benefits for non-special education teachers.
What Brick and other districts did is
perfectly legal, however. In fact, about 40 percent of the New Jersey
school districts that received $360 million worth of special education
grants from the stimulus spent as much as half of their windfall on
general school purposes, compared to 44 percent nationwide, a survey by
the U.S. General Accounting Office found.
The redirection of funds was possible
thanks to a previously little-used provision in the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act, the federal statute that guarantees
children with disabilities the right to a "free and appropriate"
education.
The law allows districts to use up to
half of any annual increase in such federal aid to replace local tax
dollars earmarked for special education, freeing up those funds for
other uses.
Few districts have exercised this option
in the past because the increases are usually paltry, but last year was
a different story.
The historic $787 billion economic
stimulus included an extra $11.3 billion in federal aid for special
education, more than twice what districts normally would receive. The
aid was in the form of IDEA Part B grants. The stimulus also included
an additional $400 million in Part B preschool grants.
Districts were quick to take advantage
of the wiggle room in the law to steer funds to other things besides
special education.

Gigi
Jordan, Mom Accused of Killing Autistic Son, May Have Had
Munchausen's Syndrome
By Shayna Jacobs, DNAinfo. is.gd/aP8eY
The NY mom charged with murdering her
autistic son at the Peninsula Hotel had been diagnosed with a
controversial illness whereby parents exaggerate the severity of their
children's illness and forced them to
undergo
unnecessary treatments,
prosecutors said Friday.
Assistant District |
|
Gigi Jordan's son, Jude.
|
Attorney
Kerry
O'Connell told a judge that Jordan had a history of Munchausen's
syndrome by proxy, a mental illness that causes parents or guardians to
inflate symptoms and seek medical attention for their children as a way
to elicit sympathy. O'Connell cited old medical records that mentioned
Munchausen's, but did not go into detail.
"We still don't know what she's
suffering from," said O'Connell.
Friday's hearing was the second half of
a bail hearing to determine whether Jordan, 49, can leave the East
Elmhurst Hospital jail and voluntarily commit herself to the
psychiatric ward at St. Vincent's Hospital.
Jordan's lawyer Gerald Shargel wants his
client released on $5 million bail. Her assets would be frozen and she
would wear a GPS tracking device on her ankle.
He claims she needs more medical
attention than what is provided by the Department of Correction.
"Putting Ms. Jordan there is essentially
warehousing her," Shargel said.
Prosecutors are opposed to Jordan being
voluntarily committed because they say the multimillionaire is a flight
risk.
"They are not going to have armed guards
sitting outside her door 24/7," O'Connell said.
The parties are due back in court on
April 8 for a decision.

cure his epilepsy.
Wang Choaxu, 29, allegedly believed a
myth that eating a child's brain can cure people of fits, the Sun
reported.
Li Xuetang, 11, disappeared from his
village late at night before being found several hours later in a grain
field 5km away.
According to reports the top of the
boy's head had been peeled back with a part of his brain missing.
Choaxu allegedly told police he believed
he could cure his epilepsy if he ate the brain with earthworms and ants.
He is also accused of killing a
three-year-old girl who was found dead on the same day in a public
toilet with a knife cut to her head.

Can
Strep Throat Lead to Behavior Problems?
By The New York Times is.gd/aPizM
Can a bout of strep throat lead to
serious behavioral problems like obsessive hand washing or odd tics in
children?
The condition, known as Pandas, for
pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with
streptococcal infection, remains a controversial topic among child
health experts. Dr. Robert King and Dr. James Leckman of the Yale Child
Study Center, who recently joined the Consults blog to answer readers’
questions about Tourette’s syndrome, here respond to readers concerned
about the link between strep and obsessive-compulsive disorders.
Q.
If your child shows symptoms of a tic
disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder or Tourette’s syndrome, you
should have them checked for strep. Pandas, could be the cause. A
simple blood test will tell if your child’s “strep titers” are at an
abnormal level.
This can be treated with antibiotics.
Worth checking out before you subject your child to psychiatric
medications. Not all doctors believe in Pands. But let me tell you,
it’s worth finding a doctor who does.

RESEARCH
Some
Bullies Are Just the Shy Type
New Research Shows a Darker Side to Social Anxiety Disorder
sciencedaily.com
is.gd/aPhJW
ScienceDaily — When you think of
people suffering from social anxiety, you probably characterize them as
shy, inhibitive and submissive. However, new research from
psychologists Todd Kashdan and Patrick McKnight at George Mason
University suggests that there is a subset of socially anxious people
who act out in aggressive, risky ways -- and that their behavior
patterns are often misunderstood In the new study published in Current
Directions in Psychological Science, Kashdan and McKnight found
evidence that a subset of adults diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder
were prone to behaviors such as violence, substance abuse, unprotected
sex and other risk-prone actions. These actions caused positive
experiences in the short-term, yet detracted from their quality of life
in the longer-term.
"We often miss the underlying problems
of people around us. Parents and teachers might think their kid is a
bully, acts out and is a behavior problem because they have a conduct
disorder or antisocial tendencies," says Kashdan. "However, sometimes
when we dive into the motive for their actions, we will find that they
show extreme social anxiety and extreme fears of being judged. If
social anxiety was the reason for their behavior, this would suggest an
entirely different intervention."

Show 'Parenthood', Highlights Experiences Of Asperger Child
By Beth Kelleher examiner.com is.gd/aPdZr
NBC's new show 'Parenthood' gets a lot
of things right and some things not-so-right about high-functioning
autistic children in its first three episodes.
|
|
|
The first two episodes
establish that parents
Adam and Kristina Braverman's son Max has some
particular sensitivities and a propensity for tantrums and by the end
of the second episode, he is diagnosed with Asperger's. In the third
episode, Max is kicked out of school for breaking a fish tank and the
Bravermans embark on efforts to get him into a high-priced private
school for high-functioning autistic children.
While it's heartening to see a focus on
children who are borderline or 'mild' on the spectrum and the struggles
of a family to come to terms with a diagnosis, it's disheartening to
see how easily the Bravermans solve the problem of Max's school
placement. It's great that the availability of specialized schools is
brought to general attention, however, by skipping over the typical
process of working with the public school district's support programs,
early intervention programs, or intermediate units, an opportunity is
lost to focus on options that do not involve paying high fees for
private school. Since the show is set in Berkeley, California, it's not
necessarily accurate to represent the area as lacking for resources for
children with Asperger's. A perusal of the Berkeley Parents Network's
discussions on special education may be interesting for first-person
experiences with Berkeley's public and private schools and surrounding
districts' offerings.
It's also surprising that Max
Braverman's doctor doesn't recommend him for a behavioral or learning
support program, or blended services such as wraparound which can be
very helpful for high-functioning autistic children who don't qualify
for more intensive services. A Behavior Support Consultant (BSC),
Mobile Therapist (MT), and/or a Therapeutic Staff Support (TSS) person
could work with a child like Max in a home setting to provide a
behavioral treatment program in tandem with his doctor, for instance.
He could also be assigned an aide for school to help with situations
like the fish tank incident.

official selection at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival
Narrated by Academy Award® winner
Kate Winslet Music by Sigur Ros and Bjork and an appearance by Temple
Grandin
Premieres on HBO on World Autism
Awareness Day: Friday, April 2nd at 6 p.m. ET/PT
Imagine not being able to express your
thoughts or feelings to anyone. Imagine having to depend on the
assistance of others with every mundane task. Imagine living with
these limitations despite having an active mind. In A Mother’s
Courage: Talking Back to Autism, the mother of an autistic boy from
Iceland travels to the U.S. to research new therapies for children with
autism, in the hopes of unlocking the autistic mind.
A Mother’s Courage: Talking Back
to Autism, a documentary by Academy Award®-nominated director
Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, tells the story of Margret, an Icelandic
woman whose 10-year-old son Keli is severely autistic. Though she
has tried a number of treatments, Margret is at the end of her rope,
fearing that Keli may never be self-sufficient or express himself
normally. Still, Margret has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge
about this mysterious and complex condition. In an effort to
better understand her son’s autism, she travels from Iceland to the
United States and Europe, where she meets with scientists and experts
in the fields of autism and autism therapies. Along the way, she
also connects with families with autistic children, and hears stories
of their efforts to help their kids interact with the world around
them. Over the course of her journey, Margaret meets Soma
Mukhopadhyay, Executive Director of Education of the HALO Clinic in
Texas. Soma developed a technique, which she calls the Rapid
Prompting Method, and Keli slowly starts to answer basic questions
during his first session with Soma. Finally Margret is given a
glimmer of hope that her son may be able to communicate on a level she
never expected.
Featuring narration by Academy
Award® winner Kate Winslet, music by Sigur Ros and Bjork and an
appearance by Temple Grandin, this inspiring documentary shows that
with innovative therapies, it may be possible to break down the walls
of autism - and get to know the child behind it.

Shifting
Focus: 8 Facts About Autism the Media Is Not Covering
By Holly Robinson Peete Actress, author,
activist and philanthropist on huffington.post.
is.gd/aO7jx
Over the years many parents have reached
out to me for emotional support after their child was diagnosed with
autism. I particularly remember getting
Jenny McCarthy's phone call shortly
after |
|
|
her
son's diagnosis. Like most moms and dads, she needed
to connect with somebody who knew first hand the swift gut-kick of this
difficult diagnosis, somebody who had been in the trenches for 7 years
already.
We cried. We cussed. We even managed to
laugh. We spoke for eight hours. She was naturally frustrated with the
lack of answers about autism. I was there for her as I'd be for any
parent, and I told her she was blessed to get such an early diagnosis.
Her passion was palpable and I could tell she was going to grab autism
by the horns, making it her mission and focus. I knew she'd help spread
autism awareness like nobody else could and the media would pay
attention. Since that phone call, she has created a very successful
platform with her powerful opinions, blogs and books on vaccine safety,
diet and recovering her son among other things. It has been a
courageous, controversial and fearless ride. Miss Jenny is not scared
to get in the ring with the big boys!
Though I share many of same concerns, I
feel compelled to shed light on the fact that families affected by
autism are struggling on multiple levels. We need a shift of focus to
share the spotlight with other often overshadowed issues that
profoundly impact families daily.
To that end, below I highlight 8 things
about autism the media is not covering enough. They are not hot-button,
provocative or headline-grabbing, but with 1 in 110 children affected
by autism (and rising), these issues desperately need more attention:
1. Autism Is Unaffordable
I'd love to see more media focus on how
ridiculously expensive it is to treat a child with autism. You can
counsel folks all day long to get early intervention, but who in the
world can pay for it? Therapies can average over $100-$150 an hour -
many require up to 14 or more hours a week. With insurance companies
still not covering the vast amount of therapies needed, too many
families are forced to pay out of pocket for much of these expenses. A
2006 Harvard study puts the average cost of services for an individual
with autism is $3.2 million over his/her lifetime! A total of $35
billion a year is spent on services for individuals with autism in the
U.S. The numbers have climbed since then...
Bottom line is treatment is completely
and ridiculously unaffordable and can financially bring a family to its
knees... even in good times.
Families live on pins and needles with
hopes that they're doing the right thing. But the fact is for too many,
the things we want to do are simply out of reach financially. I can
think of no worse scenario than not being able to afford to help your
child.
2. Parental Guilt

Autism,
Vaccines, Thimerosal: Further Study Needed
By Julie Obradovic from the
ageofautism.com is.gd/aPbsu
In light of the recent Vaccine Court
ruling I thought I would again highlight for readers precisely what has
and has not been studied with regard to Thimerosal.
The fact is, it is impossible,
absolutely, positively impossible to exonerate vaccines and/or
Thimerosal in Autism based on the current science. Honest, ethical, and
responsible people have no choice but to concede that in good faith.
Remember, only 1 ingredient (thimerosal)
and 1 injection (the MMR) have been studied for their relationship to
Autism. No study exists on the combination of vaccines given to
children in a real world setting, with or without additional
environmental insults such as antibiotics, or with regard to genetic
susceptibilities.
No study has looked at the possible
effect of the synergistic toxicity of aluminum and thimerosal, which
are never supposed to be used in combination (according to the
Manufacturer Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for thimerosal ) and are indeed
combined in many shots (according to the Vaccine Excipient
Summary from the CDC).
And no controlled study, not one, exists
on the effect of low dose ethyl mercury toxicity in humans (a statement
made by study author Anders Hviid himself below on p.1765).
Furthermore, the studies are
overwhelmingly population based which is widely accepted as incapable
of ruling out causation. The authors repeatedly fail to identify or
seek out vulnerable populations.
And last but not least, there are the
tremendous conflicts of interest presented by the authors, more often
than not witnesses for the government in vaccine injury cases, vaccine
patent holders, and/or employees of pharmaceutical companies that
produce vaccines.
But perhaps most significant, the
conclusion that we cannot determine whether or not vaccines or
Thimerosal cause autism by the current available science is supported
by the authors of the science themselves.
Having carefully read all of the studies
countless times, I found that the authors were always doing 3 specific
things. One, they came to a different conclusion than or an exaggerated
conclusion of what the evidence actually showed. Two, they then used
one another as evidence to why their interpretation of the evidence was
probably right. Three, they were quick to dismiss any negative
associations as chance, and embraced any positive associations as
significant. There was always an excuse suggested when the result was
not in the favor of vaccines being safe. Likewise, no excuse was made
when the result indicated something absolutely preposterous, like more
mercury injected into a child is beneficial to their health.
